Avon Junction By Denis Pidgeon
A G.W.R. secondary line set between 1940-1945 close to the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire.
A double track line leaves the main route some 25 miles to the east of Avon Junction. The line then continues west from the junction as a single track. There is also a short branch line serving a small country market town some 5 miles away. Some of the passenger services terminate at Avon Junction.
Set during the 1940`s, with many special services running, coaching stock and locomotives from other companies could be seen at the junction due to wartime conditions. In addition, being not too far from Swindon, G.W.R locomotives not normally associated with secondary route duties could also be seen on "running in" turns after overhaul at the main G.W.R locomotive works.
This layout was built by club member Denis Pidgeon during the mid 1990`s and was first exhibited at the Tonbridge MRC show in 1998. The layout has attended shows around Kent and Sussex on an infrequent, but regular basis. In 2007 the layout attended the Tonbridge show for the fourth time, with Denis this time offering the layout for sale. After some deliberation, some of the people who have helped Denis operate the layoutin the past, purchased the layout from him in order to keep the layout within the club and also to keep the layout on the exhibition circuit.
