Barncombe Junction
4mm/ft 00 gauge

Barncombe Junction is the clubs ‘00’ gauge layout. It is loosely based on the trackplan of Barnstaple Junction, but has been adapted for operating use by the club. The size of the layout is 30ft long by 2ft wide including a 6-road fiddle yard. It also has 2 hidden fiddle yards, one from the branch line going behind the carriage sidings, and the other behind the industrial area. This allows trains to pass straight through the station if we wanted.

The basic design is for two mainlines, with a branch line leaving at either end of the station. The branch line heading into the fiddle yard behind the industrial area is actually a continuation of the main line, but we would have trains split in the station before continuing with their journey. Also included is a goods yard area, industrial siding, 2 engine sheds (one of which has a turntable to allow us to turn the main line locomotives) and carriage sidings.

The club can operate the layout as either a Southern/GWR layout set in the 1930/40’s or as a British Railways layout in 50/60’s. The Station buildings, Footbridge, Goods Shed and Engine Shed are all scratch built by (former club chairman) Jim Filmore. The industrial area buildings were scratch-built by Alastair Woodford. The scenery was developed by Denis Pidgeon, and the electrics by Colin Webber. It must also be said that a couple of the club members also built propriety kits for the layout, these being; Richard Avis (coaling tower), David Hipkin (secondary signalbox) and Ken Alder who built the railwayman’s cottage and scratch-built the main signalbox.

The majority of the stock run on the layout is that of club member’s and is mainly RTR models. Although the club has had some stock donated to it that were kit built. Although there is still work being done on the layout in the scenery department. The club has exhibited Barncombe Junction at several exhibitions:

Our own Exhibtion in 2000, 2001 and 2005.
Tunbridge Wells Model Railway Club in 2000 and
Ashford Model Railway Club in 2001

It is hoped that all work will be finished within the next year.
